Exploring Bungle Bungles in Purnululu National Park: Tips and Adventures

Due to the temporary closure of the Bungle Bungles caravan park, we wanted to share our recent experience with fellow travel enthusiasts exploring Australia’s majestic landscapes.

Camping and Access:

Unfortunately, double axle caravans are not allowed within the National Park, but fear not; single axle, camper trailers, and tents are welcome. Given the popularity of the campgrounds, it’s crucial to book in advance to secure your spot amid the breathtaking Bungle Bungles.

Rest Areas and Strategic Planning:

Our initial plan was to stay at Spring Creek Rest Area, but it was fully occupied upon our arrival. Instead, we found Leychester Rest Area down the road, a fantastic alternative. Concerned about leaving our caravan there overnight, we woke up early and headed to Spring Creek at 7 am, successfully securing a spot from early departures.

Early Exploration and Road Conditions:

Entering the National Park at 7:45 am, we recommend even earlier starts (around 6-7 am) for more extensive exploration opportunities. The 53-km journey to the park is a rugged, rocky, and winding adventure with multiple creek crossings. Lowering tire pressure and adapting to conditions is essential. The entrance road took us 2 hours to navigate in and 1.5 hours to exit.

Visitor Centre Essentials:

Upon reaching the visitor centre, situated after the challenging road, make sure to register, pay park fees if you lack a pass (they need to see your pass), and grab a park map. The facility offers pristine toilets and a coffee vending machine for a quick pick-me-up.

Exploring the South:

The friendly staff at the visitor centre suggested starting with the South area to witness the iconic Bungle Bungles. A further 27-km drive leads to Piccaniny Picnic Area, the gateway to the southern walks – a much smoother road compared to the entrance.

Family-Friendly Tracks:

With a 6 and 8-year-old in tow, we opted for a couple of tracks that allowed us to savor every moment:

  • The Domes Loop (South)
  • The Cathedral Gorge (South)
  • Echidna Chasm (North)

Given the chance, we would have extended our stay to fully immerse ourselves in the park’s wonders.

Unforgettable Day and Departure:

Our day was long but immensely rewarding. The National Park’s allure and the unique Bungle Bungles left us in awe. To ensure a timely return before dark, we aimed to leave by 3:30 pm, making a delightful stop at the visitor centre for an ice cream on our way out.

In conclusion, the Purnululu National Park and its Bungle Bungles are a true marvel, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For those embarking on their Australian travel adventure, this iconic destination should undoubtedly be on your list! 🏞️🚗🏕️

Bonus: How are the Bungle Bungles formed?

We found this super interesting, so wanted to share it to finish off this article – what makes the Bungle Bungles so distinct? They derive their distinctive orange and black stripes from a fascinating geological process. Composed primarily of sandstone and conglomerates, the unique banding is a result of varying layers of sediment deposition over millions of years. The alternating bands of dark-colored cyanobacteria (microorganisms that thrive in extreme conditions) and lighter layers of silica and algae contribute to the stunning contrast. Erosion, primarily caused by rainfall and weathering, further refines these formations, creating the intricate domes and chasms that characterize the landscape. This intricate interplay of geological and biological processes not only gives the Bungle Bungles their remarkable coloration but also adds a tactile texture to the surface, making them an extraordinary and visually captivating natural wonder.
